Choosing a Business Security System in Lebanon: Alarm, CCTV and Power Cuts

Security has moved up the agenda for Lebanese businesses. The U.S. Overseas Security Advisory Council reports that petty theft in metropolitan Beirut has increased compared with 2024 and expects burglaries to keep rising as economic conditions worsen (OSAC), and many residents and business owners have responded by installing surveillance cameras (Crisis Group).

But in Lebanon, a security system has to solve one problem that most international buying guides ignore: it must keep working when the power and internet do not.

Cameras alone are not a security system

CCTV records what happened. An alarm system detects an intrusion as it starts and alerts you immediately. The strongest setups combine both:

  • Intrusion alarm: motion detectors, door and window contacts, glass-break detectors and panic buttons, armed when the site is closed.

  • Video: cameras and a recorder that let you verify an alarm in seconds and keep evidence.

  • Fire detection: smoke, heat and carbon monoxide detectors, on the same app.

  • Access control: cards, fobs or phones instead of keys, with a log of who entered and when.

Five questions to ask before you buy

1. What happens during a power cut?

Many cheap systems go dark when the generator switches over. Look for battery-powered detectors and a hub with its own backup battery, and put the camera recorder and network on a UPS.

2. What happens when the internet drops?

An alarm that only reports over Wi-Fi is useless during an outage. Professional hubs, such as Ajax, communicate over Ethernet, Wi-Fi and two SIM cards at once, so alerts still get through.

3. Can it be jammed or tampered with?

Ask how the system detects sabotage. Ajax's Jeweller radio, for example, checks every device at short intervals, hops frequencies under interference and raises a jamming alarm if devices go silent.

4. Can you see what triggered the alarm?

Photo verification (MotionCam detectors) or camera integration lets you confirm a real intrusion from your phone before anyone responds, cutting false alarms.

5. Who maintains it?

Batteries, firmware, camera storage and detector placement all need attention. A system with no maintenance plan degrades quietly until it fails.

Wired or wireless?

Wired systems remain a good choice in new buildings during construction. In existing offices, shops, schools and warehouses, professional wireless systems install in hours with no wall damage, and certified wireless systems now reach high security grades previously associated only with wired installations.
